Summer Science Outreach Jobs with SPICE

The SPICE Program has a number of summer outreach and research opportunities available with our Summer camps. Paid, volunteer, and for-credit options are available. Detail for each are listed below. Positions start in June.

Positions: Lead Instructors $12/hr (for-credit internships also available)

*Position Description Lead Instructors: The Science Program to Inspire Creativity and Excellence (SPICE) is an informal science outreach program for middle school girls in Lane county. SPICE needs lead instructors for the SPICE 2015 Science Summer Camps. Duties include: Leading 20 girls ages 11-14 in fun hands on science activities. Developing age appropriate group and individual science activities. Supervising volunteers.

Schedule all activities and volunteers, lead activities, supervise volunteers, develop new activities. Camp runs July 10-21 and August 7-28, M-F 9am-4pm. Preparation takes place in the month of June. One week of follow up work after camp required.

Discovery Camp Leaders (2 positions): Lead the 2 week discovery camp for 20 rising 6th grade girls around the theme of data collection and analysis using activities from multiple disciplines.

Forensic Investigation Camp Leaders (2 positions): Lead 2 week forensics camp for 20 rising 7th grade girls around the theme of forensic investigation using activities from psychology, chemistry, physics, geology and more.

Engineering Camp Leaders (1-2 positions): Lead the 2 week Engineering camp for 20 rising 8thth grade girls around the theme of Computer Science and Engineering. Lead session in programming, construction, and design for building functional pinball machines. Full training for instructors will be provided in May and June.

*Qualifications: SPICE instructors need to be: Enthusiastic about science Eager to work with middle school aged children Have a background/education/training in either science or K-12 education

Preferred qualifications for applicants: Prior work with school age children Prior science outreach experience Strong interest in diversity

Positions: Educational Research Assistants $12/hr

*Position Description Educational Research Assistants:Two or more researchers are needed to help collect, code and transcribe data for a project evaluating the impacts of an informal science outreach program on middle school aged girls science identities and attitudes. Research assistants will administer surveys and other research instruments, lead focus group interviews, and conduct observations. Research assistants will work closely with the principal investigator to ensure fidelity of observations, implementation and coding. 50+ hours of work total for the months of July & August. The bulk of data collection will be between July 10-21 and August 7-18th. This is an excellent chance to get hands on experience conducting mixed methods research in education.

*Position Description Instructional Volunteers: The Science Program to Inspire Creativity and Excellence (SPICE) is an informal science outreach program for middle school girls in Lane county. SPICE needs lead instructors for the SPICE 2015 Science Summer Camps. Duties include: Leading 20 girls ages 11-14 in fun hands on science activities. Developing age appropriate group and individual science activities. Hours flexible depending on availability.

For-credit internships are also available.
